Peru’s President Alejandro Toledo has signed a bill on Regulations for Footwear Labelling. The ceremony took place at the Centre for Technological Innovation in Leather, Footwear and Related Industries (CITEccal). It was attended by civil servants, officials and representatives of related sectors.
The new regulation will require all footwear sold in Peru to be labelled, featuring the country of origin, materials used in the manufacturing process and the tax registration number of the manufacturer.
The measure is designed to help detect contraband shoes and help reduce counterfeit or unregistered operations. Peru’s legitimate manufacturers are
suffering from an influx of dishonest competition.
