Bangladesh leather exporters ask for incentives

05/10/2004

Bangladesh’s leather exporters have asked the government for cash incentives, claiming that these are vital if they are to compete in the international market. According to the Bangladesh Finished Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters’ Association (BFLLFA), this situation is in part due to a high level of competition from Indian and Pakistani exporters, who already receive cash incentives.

A delegation from the BFLLFA has met with ministers in the hope of solving this problem and improving the position of the industry. They have proposed that the cash incentive could be implemented in the form of a reduction in duty tax so that exporters can compete on level terms with their rivals in the international market. They have also requested that a new leather park be established so that the industry can develop on a par with other countries.
