17/09/2004

57 Turkish companies will exhibit at GDS, which runs from September 16-19 in Düsseldorf. Shoes for the coming season spring/summer 2005 will be on show, along with concepts for autumn/winter 2004/05. There is a wide range of products on offer, which spans fancy to comfortable.

In 2003 official foreign and domestic sales for the Turkish leather industry - including shoes, clothing, accessories, skins and furs – amounted to $760 million. The country has some 300 shoe manufacturers producing about 350 million pairs of shoes.

Although producing predominantly for the domestic market – with a volume of around $2 billion - interest from foreign countries is growing rapidly. In 2003 about 70 million pairs amounting to $173 million were sold abroad. In 2002 the export volume reached $132 million. Most of the exports went to Germany, France, Russia, Israel and Saudi Arabia, with Poland, Italy, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Jordan also importing Turkish shoes.

As part of the country’s drive to improve quality it has set up a Shoe Industry Research, Development and Education Foundation.
