Pakistan local government to flush out polluters

15/09/2004

The local government of Rawalpindi in the Punjab province of Pakistan has issued a stern message to footwear and chemical companies in the area who are causing environmental damage through water pollution. The council is determined to relocate these companies outside of the city before November 30, in an attempt to reduce pollution and the health risk to the local inhabitants.

“There will be no compromise with the people who are causing air and water pollution in the city. They have been directed to shift outside the city to an area for which the government is not responsible,” said Raja Tariq Kiani, speaking on behalf of the local government.

Some 1,000 small companies in the area - which manufacture chemicals, footwear, soap and other products - have been accused of releasing industrial effluent, including chemical waste, into the sewage system, causing a high level of pollution in the city.
