India and Italy to collaborate on leather resources

15/09/2004

In an attempt to improve the leather trade between Italy and India, private and public leather units are working on plans to improve ties between the two countries. The idea is founded on establishing leather technical centres in Calcutta - based on models that have proved successful in Italy - in an attempt to improve the industry in India.

A study has been carried out to identify the different aspects of the industry, before the centres are established in order to ascertain the positive and negative aspects of the industry in India and to highlight areas for improvement.

The Indian Council of Leather Exporters chairman, S.S. Kumar, commented that this had been a good exercise in improving Indo-Italian relations and that it had also highlighted that although leather units in Italy and Calcutta are of a similar standard, there is a large disparity in quality levels and productivity.

Secretary-General of Pisie - a private leather organisation in Italy - proposed the project in an attempt to improve the transfer of knowledge between the two countries, so that Italian companies can enter the India market through joint ventures and exports.
