South African ostrich farmers to receive compensation

06/09/2004

The South African Department of Agriculture has announced plans to compensate the farmers who have suffered financially due to the culling of at least 2,000 ostriches, following the outbreak of avian flu last month

The compensation is expected to be paid to the breeders as early as the end of the week, following the department’s agreement on what was deemed to be a fair level of reparation.

The South African ostrich business chamber welcomed the department’s speedy response to the situation and praised the decision-makers for offering the farmers involved an acceptable, fitting level of compensation.
