Valencian Community to clean up its industries

02/09/2004

According to the autonomous government of the Valencian Community, Spain, the regional land and housing authorities have received 240 requests from the Integrated Environmental Association regarding control pollution for businesses in the region.

The figures suggest that approximately 66% of facilities obliged to address the petition by January 2007 have already adopted their processes to the requirements of Law for Prevention and Integrated Control against Pollution (IPPC).

The same source stated that a total of 364 enterprises operating in the region will have to adjust their procedures to the norm before it comes into force. These include enterprises with combustion facilities, those managing residue, producing and transforming metals, consuming organic and carbon dissolvents. The industries affected include minerals, chemicals, cellulose production, textiles, leather and agriculture.

The Integrated Environmental Association operates as a regulator for industries with greatest polluting potential, with the purpose of preventing and reducing toxic emissions across the Valencian Community. Castellón province takes the biggest share of enterprises affected by the law, an entire 52% of all 364, mainly in the mineral sector of ceramics, followed by Valencia with 39% and Alicante with 9%.

So far three enterprises have obtained the licence from IEA: BP Oil Refinery in Castellon, Finaltair Energía, S.A. and Unión Fenosa Generación, S.A.
