Ostrich flu under control?

27/08/2004

After the South African government imposed a voluntary ban on exports of all ratites (poultry and ostrich), it was formalized by the EU.

Currently serum tests are being performed on all ostrich farms in the country and, as soon as proof of non-existence of avian influenza outside of the quarantine area is proved and 21 days have lapsed since the last case of the disease was reported, an application will be filed for the ban to be lifted.

The infected area is limited two farms in the Eastern Cape. Quarantine was implemented in the area with immediate effect. Local bird production and processing will continue outside the affected area.

The cull has now been completed. It was done by the state under the auspices of international animal welfare. Oudsthoorn is currently only affected by the lack of exports of meat. Various scenarios are possible regarding leather supplies and a limited availability of birds may create shortages.
