Israeli leather exports to China slide

25/08/2004

High-tech exports to China rose by 55% to $201 million in the first half of the year and total exports were up by 51% to $314 million. Leather exports were down by 31% to $4.2 million, whilst exports of chemicals and refined oil products grew by 30% to $27 million.

Exports to China are expected to grow by 25% to $640 million this year, according to Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute

Institute director Yechiel Assia. He said that China’s rapid economic growth provided opportunities for Israeli industry across the economy including agricultural inputs.

The Export Institute and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labour have drawn up a plan to quadruple exports to China to $2 billion by 2008. The plan targets Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, as well as Shanghai and Beijing.
