CLIA becomes CLA

13/08/2004

With the approval of National Civil Administration Bureau, the China Leather Industries Association (CLIA) has abbreviated its name to China Leather Association (CLA).

The association’s website says the name change is aimed at reflecting the association’s status as an organisation representing not just leathermakers, but businesses that have thrived in the open market economy, such as laboratories and universities besides.

Though no longer a government ministry, a key task of the association remains the collection of information and statistics on behalf of the government. It also represents the industry to the government and encourages the industry to speak and act as a single entity.  Its activities include the promotion of the Genuine Leather Mark and helping in the development of brands.

The association was established in 1988 when the planning economy was still dominant and today comprises over 1200 members.
