Bangladeshi tannery workers discuss child labour issue

Bangladesh's Hazaribagh Tannery Workers Union (HTWU) has held a meeting to discuss ending child labour in the leather industry.

 

Former advisor of the caretaker government and chairman of Apex Group of Bangladesh, Syed Manzoor Elahi, was guest of honour at the meeting, which was chaired by the president of HTWU, Abul Kalam Azad.

 

Held at the Bangladesh College of Leather Technology, the meeting was addressed by Chief Technical Officer of ILO area office Pachuprasat Pracha, ward commissioner Mohammad Harun Chowdhury, Sector Coordinator of ILO Programme on Elimination of Child Labour Munira Sultana and HTWU general secretary Abdul Malek.

 

The speakers at the meeting were all agreed that a concerted effort must be made to eliminate the worst forms of child labour from every sector of the industry, including tanneries. They also thanked the ILO for its response to the cause of children working in the tanning industry, match factories and other areas.
