Argentina’s fair success

22/07/2004

The next edition of the Argentine leather goods show, CECMA, will be held at the Centro Costa Salguero, Buenos Aires, on 8-10 August 2004.

According to the organiser CIMA (Argentine Chamber of Leather Goods and Allied Sectors), the previous February edition showed very encouraging results, with business flourishing among domestic and foreign buyers. The success is also reflected in various economic indicators, such as the expected 10% increase in the sector’s exports for 2004 that include leather goods, garments, luggage items, saddlery and fashion accessories.

With a strengthened domestic market, resulting from the recovery in the Argentine economy, including tourism, the labour market and exports, the fair has seen a rise in the number of visitors in recent editions, especially among international buyers. They came from other Latin-American countries, the Caribbean, the USA and Canada, as well as from Denmark, France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand and South-Africa.

CIMA also attributes the upturn in the sector to a stronger emphasis on design and quality. The latest generation of entrepreneurs to have joined the industry are capitalising on the revival seen in Argentinean design which is now much more in tune with international fashion.

The August show is expected to host more visitors and more exhibition space, helping to widen the selection of goods on offer. After exhibiting its products at various international fairs in 2002 and 2003, the country’s leather goods industry is gaining ground in the international marketplace.

With CIMA actively promoting the sector, international buyers are more often turning their eyes on Buenos Aires, and CEMCA, on their business itineraries.
