Wenzhou’s leather import booms

21/07/2004

The first half of 2004 has registered a significant increase in quantity and value of imported leather by Wenzhou city, according to the Wenzhou customs.

Between January and June the city’s port handled 45,515 tons of hides and leather worth up to $72 million, an increase of 53.22% in volume and 61.8% in value against the same period last year. The average import price of blue wet rose by 78% to $0.92 p/k during the period.

The rising statistics are attributed to new anti-smuggling measures and the adoption of bonded process trade, a new business gradually gaining popularity among leather enterprises.

The latest figures issued by China Leather Industry Association indicate that total production value of large enterprises with a yearly sales value of $609,000 (5 million) and above, reached $25.6 billion (210.3 billion) last year, a 20.9% increase on the previous year.

Asian Pacific Leather Fair Co Ltd predicts that China’ increasing imports will result in a larger number of booths from key leather making countries like Brazil, Germany and Pakistan at the All China Leather Fair to be held in Shanghai on 1 – 3 September.
