Exports key to Namibian growth

Leather is among the commodities identified as Namibia’s potential major exports, among with agricultural, metal, chemical products, jewellery and diamond finishing.

Former Trade, Industry and Foreign Affairs Minister of Namibia, Hidipo Hamutenya, is campaigning for production diversification and the increase of export activities, as basic conditions for the country’s rise to a global market position.

His appeal was voiced this week at the Economist Business Forum, a trade promotion event designed to bring together major economic players and provide a forum for thought exchange, sharing of knowledge and business promotion.

Namibia carries a burden of the pre-Independence era that left its businesses serving mainly as an outlet for South African manufacturers. Hamutenya has urged businesses to diversify their production and increase their exports. He has also called for substantial investment to the export sector, stressing the role of sustained growth and the retention domestic savings.
