Vietnam the world’s fourth largest exporter of leather products - 8.7

Vietnam earned $1.29 billion from exporting footwear in the first six months of the year, making the country the fourth largest leather product exporter in the world, according to the Industry Ministry. The figures show a year-on-year increase of 14.8 percent.

The ministry said the European Union (EU) accounted for 80 percent of the total export volume. Exports to the US increased slightly, while those to Japan and other markets showed slight fluctuations.

Vietnamese leather and footwear companies are seeking new partners, expanding their markets, investing in trade promotion activities and modernising their equipment. The ministry expected that the country would achieve an export turnover of $2.6-2.65 billion from footwear exports in the year.

However, Vietnamese products have faced fierce competition from Chinese leather goods in the US market, according to the president of the Viet Nam Leather and Footwear Association Nguyen Gia Thao. Leather products to the EU market would alter in the future as the EU reconsiders its application of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) on the eight largest exporters including Vietnam to the Union.
