Indian Government considers footwear training school - 9.7
A fully fledged training institute for the leather and footwear sector is being planned by the Indian state government.
Mohammad Salim, newly-elected Member of Parliament and former state minister, made the initial announcement during a speech at the Kolkata shoe fair on Saturday (3 July). He said the government will only act as facilitators in the project, so the entrepreneurs will need to take the ultimate initiative.
The footwear and leather industries are vital to the Indian economy with the total leather and leather goods exports from the country estimated to be $2 billion, of which footwear accounted for Rs 2,500 crore ($540 million).
