Tax meeting for Pakistan garment exporters
A delegation from the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PLGMEA) has met with Khwaja Tanveer Ahmed, Collector Sales Tax Enforcement) to discuss the sales tax rules amended by the Federal Budget 2004-05.
Chairman PLGMEA, Fawad Ijaz Khan led the delegation, which comprised of Rizwan Ahmed Khan, Irfan Iqbal, M Khursheed Ahmed and Shahid Malik. Ijaz apprised Tanveer Ahmed of the problems encountered by several members of the Association in obtaining sales tax refunds and deferred claims. The collector elaborated the new sales tax refund rules and informed the delegation of the new system of sales tax refund - Sales Tax Risk Evaluation and Monitoring System (STREAMS).
Under the system, the processing of sales tax refunds will be automated and there will be minimum interaction between the exporters with sales tax officials. Refunds will be issued via the STARR electronic transfer system directly to the exporter's account.
Tanveer Ahmed promised his staff would sort the deferred claim situation and claims under Section 66 of the Act. He also advised the PLGMEA delegation to circulate the required performa of sales tax collectorate among its members so that the STREAMS could provide the necessary information to the Collectorate for profiling purposes.
The leather garment exporters agreed to submit 12-month details of their purchases from July 2002 to June 2003, which will be analysed by the computer system according to the acceptance level of the claims.
