22/06/2004

Leather manufacturing is among the activities that have been identified by the Indian government as offering potential for further trade development.

As part of its new ‘Exim’ (Export/Import) policy, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has set an export target of $150 billion a year by 2010 as opposed to the current figure of $61 billion. The main priorities of the plan are to maximise employment opportunities by focusing on labour intensive, export oriented industries such as leather, jewellery production, agriculture, textiles and leather production.

According to G K Pillai, Additional Secretary, Union Commerce Ministry, the plan is also aimed at bringing down export transaction costs.
