European glovemakers discuss Chinese challenge

15/06/2004

The appearance of Chinese-made gloves in Russia carrying ‘Made in Romania’ hangtags were among the matters discussed at the latest quarterly meeting of the European Glove Association (EGA).

Held on Saturday (June 12) in the Romanian town of Târgu Mures, the meeting brought together glovemakers from all over the continent.  A major complaint voiced at the meeting was the increasing appearance of Chinese-made gloves bearing fake Romanian hangtags in Russia, which is the Romanian glove industry’s main export market.

Commented EGA member and Romanian glovemaker Otto Meltzer: “It was encouraging to note the level of interest registered in the association by the many local non-members who attended the meeting.  Having comprehended the scale of the challenge now facing the European industry, several of them also said they now intended to join.
