Leather industry thrives in Shi Ling Town

Latest figures from China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) show industrial output at Shi Ling Town in Guangzhou City last year totalled 5 billion Yuan ($665 million), with the leather industry accounting for 90% of the total.  

Shi Ling Town has developed to become one of China’s main leather goods producing areas, with 4,000 factories employing a workforce of 100,000.  Since the beginning of 2003, European investors have introduced 22 leather-related programmes in the town, purchasing a total of 82.4 acres for factories. A recent major investor is Far East Leather Group, a company whose turnover topped the Y1.5 million ($181 million) mark in 2003.
