Indian leather institute to implement benchmarking scheme

08/06/2004

India’s Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) has been named as the implementation agency for a three-year (2004-07) global benchmarking programme for the country’s leather units, the institute has advised.

The programme will see selected production units in each sub sector of the industry being compared directly with global best practice in manufacturing and marketing. The effectiveness of both systems and people will be monitored, as will levels of quality consistency. CLRI estimates that around 30 leather producing units account for 40% of exports in each product segment and it is expected that CLRI’s involvement will extend to around 25 units. Five units each will be selected from the different segments of the industry such as finished leather, leather footwear and footwear components, leather garments, leather goods and gloves, as well as harness and saddlery goods.

The plan will be carried out in three critical areas; management practices, certification under international standards, and training of technical personnel by experts from abroad. The programme for management practices will also include the sourcing of raw materials and inputs, CLRI says, plus inventory control and improvements in production and productivity. It will also involve exclusive training programmes for the adoption of best practice through centralised management-level programmes and on-site training.
