China’s leather production totalled Y210.3 billion ($145.5 billion) in 2003, a 21% increase on the year before, China Leather Industries Association (CLIA) has advised. The country’s export of leather goods increased 19%, with a 13% increase being seen in the first quarter of 2004, to $3.69 billion. Exports of fur garments leapt 253.5% during the same period. In announcing the figures, CLIA Director Ms Shu Cao Ying described the bulk of the exports as being low quality items, a result of poor breeding conditions and sub-standard processing techniques.
