Chinese leather goods exports rise 7.4%, imports climb 9.5%

According to the latest figures from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), the country’s leather goods exports increased 7.4% to $4.9 billion during the first quarter 2004.

 

Exports of leather footwear increased 8.6% to 356 million pairs ($1.7 billion) and leather garments rose 3.5% to 12.7 million pieces ($580 million). The most substantial gain was seen in fur exports, which climbed 222.8% to 1,005 tons ($102 million). Exports of hides, however, declined significantly, by 87% while leather glove exports fell 39%.

 

China’s imports of leather products, meanwhile, rose 9.5% to 1.4 billion. Hide imports increased 17.7% while leather garment imports climbed 65%. Imports of footwear went up just 0.14%, however imports of leather gloves grew a massive 476%.
