US auto leathermaker shows its artistic side

12/05/2004

As part of a wider promotional programme, US auto leathermaker, GST AutoLeather, has hired one of the country’s most prestigious Academies of Art to showcase it leathers.

Arranged for an invited audience of colour and trim designers from Detroit, the showings are currently taking place at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, the former residence of the renowned sculpture artist, Karl Milles. Among the exhibits are the latest design features, products and concepts in laser sketching technology, aniline leathers, GST’s ‘Mystichrome’ leather and other top-of-the-range luxury leather products.

"In the development of new looks, textures, colours and other artistic elements for automotive leathers, we find inspiration from the world around us, just like a painter, sculptor or architect," explained Jerry Lamb, manager of design and marketing services for GST AutoLeather. "We felt the Modernist and Arts & Crafts environment of the Milles house and the Cranbrook Museum offered a perfect inspirational backdrop for exploring the latest in automotive leathers."

The Cranbrook show is the third stop in the company's international tour of leather design excellence. Earlier this year the tour made stops in Japan and Los Angeles. In June, the tour goes to China for showings in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. With the China exhibits, GST AutoLeather will become the first leather supplier to conduct an automotive leather design show in China.
