Lennon’s leather collar fetches £117,250 at auction

07/05/2004

A leather collar worn by the Beatle John Lennon during the late 1960’s fetched £117,250 ($210,644) at auction this week – more than eight times the expected sale price of between £10,000 and £15,000.

The sale at London-based Christie’s was the most successful pop auction in its history, making a total of £788,643.

Other items to go under the hammer were a Vox Kensington guitar used by Lennon and George Harrison, a suede jacket worn by Eric Clapton when he was a member of Cream and an early Elvis Presley US concert poster.

The leather collar, which was given to Alexis Mardas - Lennon’s “guru and best friend” during the late ’60s, was bought by a private collector in the US.
