His lecture is intriguingly entitled ‘An imaginary journey to the collagen molecule for a better understanding of leather waste treatments’. The major themes of this year’s convention are technologies for automotive upholstery leather and a special emphasis on finishing.
During the conference, which is the centenary event for the American organisation, some 31 topics will be covered, including the migration behaviour of phenolic leather preservatives in finished leather presented by Oliver Kretschik (Bayer); upgrading – keeping leather’s elegance by Ralph Schneider (Clariant), turning low selection crust into saleable, profitable final leather articles without sacrificing their natural feel; understanding the mechanical properties of leather: tensile study by S.S. Ramkumar (Texas Tech University); sustainable leather manufacturing by Dr Stephan Hueffer (BASF); total recycling technology of chromium from liquid and solid tannery wastes including its automatic control by K.Kolomaznik (Tomas Bata University, Zlin); emission from automotive leather – state of the art and a critical foresight by Michael Breitsamer (Dr Boehme); drying automotive leathers by Toni Polato (Cartigliano); enhanced acrylic technology for automotive topcoat finishes by Joseph Hoefler (Rohm & Haas); technical differences between US and European automotive leathers by Mike Tomkin, (Stahl); technologies with critical impact on the usable area of leather by Dr Jurgen Christner (TFL); an approach to negate quality problems in the beamhouse by Dr.Thomas Feigel Trumpler; a geopolitical essay of the leather industry during the past 50 years by John Koppany; technology management in complex leather networks by Michael Redwood (World Leather).
