Strong international presence at Madrid Leather Week

07/04/2004

The organisers of Spain’s leading leather and footwear fair, International Leather Week, held in Madrid, March 26-28 2004, have said the 14th edition of the show was bigger than ever before – featuring 771 exhibitors (+9.2%) and covering an area of 35,198 square metres.

The twice yearly event, which is a joint venture between Modacalzado, the footwear and leather fashion trade fair and Iberpiel Marroquinería, the international leather goods trade fair, attracted 20,003 visitors - down 10% year-on-year.

Organisers Feria de Madrid blamed poor weather conditions across Spain for the decline, however said that there was in fact a 5% increase in participants from abroad, accounting for 15% of the total. There was also an increase in the number of international exhibitors, accounting for nearly 27% of the total.

The show featured footwear and accessory collections for the autumn/winter 2004/2005 season. According to a trends preview by the Spanish Footwear Fashion Forum (FICE), boots will once again play a prominent role in the season, as will sober colours and designs and comfortable shapes. Leather bags and accessories will feature imaginative details such as satin, sequins and bead-work.
