Boulder art work depicts leather armour

Boulder art work from the 18th Century depicting mounted warriors astride horses clad in leather armour has been identified by a researcher at the University of Colorado, US.

The findings, dated between 1700 and 1750, were made by post-doctorate anthropology student, Mark Mitchell, who said the rocks depicted Comanche Plain Indians. The drawings show the armour as rough trapezoids of leather on each side with straight to slightly flaring front and back margins and curved pieces at the top and bottom.

According to Mitchell, the strategy of using leather armour only lasted about a century, from 1650 to 1750, and collapsed due to firearms becoming available to American Indians via the French and English as bullets could penetrate the skins.
