Uganda raises hide export duties

02/04/2004

The Ugandan government has bowed to pressure from the country’s leathermakers and raised the export duty on hides and skins to 30%. The ruling follows a recent regional workshop held by the Eastern and Southern African Leather Industries Association (ESALIA) in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, in which a resolution was passed urging the Ugandan government to take steps to protect the country's leather sector. The Ugandan government also agreed to ban the export of hides altogether within three years.
