EU to extend Bulgaria’s agricultural funding

31/03/2004

The European Union (EU) will increase funding for Bulgaria’s agricultural development to €80 million in 2006, the European Commission (EC) said recently.

The country, which hopes to join the EU in 2007, currently receives €56 million per year in funding under the SAPARD pre-accession programme. This will rise 20% in 2004 and a further 10% in both 2005 and 2006.

Franz Fischler, EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, said: “This development is good news. This money is well invested to help prepare for enlargement by improving and modernising production, processing and marketing structures and by developing environmentally friendly agricultural practices such as organic farming.”
