The Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, announced during the recent Dhaka International Leather Fair (DILF) that the Government is considering setting up a ‘Leather Design Development Centre’ in the country. She also said she is currently working on a Tk1,770 million ($30 million) project which involves relocating tanneries from Hazaribagh.

According to the PM, a 15% cash incentive is currently paid on exports of leather goods while interest rates on bank loans for leather exporters have been dropped to 7%. The Bangladeshi finance minister, M Saifur Rahman, urged tannery owners and leather goods exporters to increase foreign trade. However he said would not waive tax and bank loans to assist them.
