The Indian Council for Leather Exports (CLE) has appointed a Delhi-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to assess whether the country has ample raw leather and hide supplies to support its export targets.

The CLE plans to double leather exports to $4 billion by 2010. Chairman, S S Kumar, said the association has selection an NGO to obtain an “impartial and fair” report, which can be used to draw up a roadmap to meet growing demands.

India’s total domestic requirement is currently 1.8 billion square feet of leather. Goat skin is the most widely used, followed by buffalo, cow and sheep skin. 60% of the country’s raw hides and skins are obtained from slaughter houses while 30% are fallen animals and 10% are imported.
