‘Ugg-ly’ clash between Australian manufacturers and Deckers Corp

05/03/2004

One of the latest footwear fashion crazes are ‘Ugg Boots’ – cosy sheepskin boots produced by a thriving Australian cottage industry.

The industry is however under threat by US footwear company, Deckers Corp, which claims to own the rights to the Ugg name.

Five years ago, Deckers-owned Ugg Australia registered the words “ugh”, “ugh boots”, “ugg” and “Ugg Australia” as its own in 25 countries. Australians are however claiming that the word ‘ugg’ originates from their country and is an abbreviation of the word ‘ugly.’

Australian manufacturers are refusing to back down and have set up a legal fund to finance a legal challenge against the US firm.
