India ups leather export forecast

The Indian government has forecast leather exports of $2 billion for the full year 2003/04 following the exceptional performance of the sector in the first half.

 

During the period April-August 2003, leather footwear exports rose  8.66% year-on-year to $226.93 million, leather goods by 5.68% to $220.85 million, non-leather footwear by a remarkable 106.62% to $26.70 million while saddlery & harness exports climbed 2.13% to $23.82 million.  However, exports of finished leather dropped by 5.91% to $253.52 million, footwear components fell by 16.73% to $80.10 million while leather garment exports slipped  6.17% to $141.16 million.
