Mexico extends import tariffs on Chinese footwear

12/02/2004

Mexico has extended its anti-dumping duties on Chinese footwear imports for at least another four years.

The country’s Economy Ministry claimed the action was necessary as cheap Chinese imports still posed a threat to the domestic footwear industry. The duties range between 165% and 1,105% depending on the type of footwear.

Nike de Mexico, however, is exempted as the company won a court injunction against the duties.  The Economic Ministry failed to meet the deadline to appeal against the decision and the exemption therefore went unchallenged.

According to the department, Mexico imported around 18 million pairs of shoes in 2001, of which 403,000 were from China. The chambers added that imports of footwear carrying the anti-dumping duty fell significantly between 1997 and 2001, while those not included rose.
