Hermes has posted a 1% slip in full year sales to Eur1.23 billion. However, the French luxury goods house said its fourth quarter has been unexpectedly strong.

The company, which is famed for its luxury leather handbags, announced the results in France’s Les Echos newspaper and stated that at constant exchange rates, sales actually rose 7.7%.

In the fourth quarter, sales increased 13.8% at comparable exchange rates. Analysts had predicted a slower period as underlying growth in the third quarter was 9%.

The Paris-based company will release its full-year earnings results on March 25 2004.
