South African ostrich operations merge

02/02/2004

Two of the biggest names in the South African ostrich industry have merged to create a new, combined meat and skins operation.

On January 1 2004, Exotan of Port Elizabeth and Camdeboo Meat Processors, an EU approved abattoir based in Graaff-Reinet, became Camexo SA Ltd. The new company is a subsidiary of Courthiel Holdings (Pty) Ltd, owned by the German businessman, Mr. Claas Daun.

“It made sense to merge the two companies, as the new company will be able to offer a better service to our clients and farmer producers,” commented  Mr. Hennie Roets, managing director of Camexo.  “Although Exotan had a stake in Camdeboo, our clients had to deal with two different companies for the meat and skins”.

Though well known for its output of ostrich meat, the processing business is also one of South Africa’s biggest processors of venison meat including Springbok, Kudu and Zebra. For its part, the leather business is a SABS ISO 9001 approved manufacturer and marketer of exotic leathers, encompassing Ostrich, Elephant, Buffalo and Hippo.

The Camexo executive management team is as follows:

Hennie Roets, managing director; Jerome Ingenhoes, director leather marketing
Piet Neethling, director meat marketing and manager; David Boast, technical director, leather; Hannes Jacobs,  financial director.  The merger is also seen as reducing costs as the administrative functions of the meat and leather sides of the business have also been combined.
