Istanbul leather institute to close

23/01/2004

The Leather Research and Training Institute at Pendik in Istanbul has announced its closure.  The brain-child of leather doyen, Hasman Yelmen, in 1986, the Institute's formation coincided with the move from Kazlicesme to the Tuzla leather processing zone. Turk Henkel provided the engineering and technical facilities and the school's aim was to improve scientific education within Turkey for tanning technology students. It attracted little of the anticipated state or municipal money and was overtaken by higher technology and newer business models in tanning.

The last students will graduate in June 2004.
