Russian tannery reaps environmental dividend

22/01/2004

The Elets tannery is one of several industrial concerns in Russia’s Lipetsk region to have benefited from ‘Clean Industry’ – a joint Norwegian/Russian initiative aimed at improving the environmental performance of industries in the region.  According to local reports, over the past two years, 12 local industrial enterprises have been involved in the programme which has seen workers being trained in new environmental technologies in Norway. At the Elets tannery, a new technology based on chemical solutions recycling was introduced.  Not only did this reduce the tannery’s environmental footprint, it also reduced its chemical expenditure by 2 million roubles in 2003.
