Indonesian Government urged not to impose wet blue export ban

20/01/2004

The Indonesian Footwear Association (Aprisindo) has urged the country’s Department of Trade and Industry not to impose a ban on the export of hides and wet blue before the processing industry is ready.

Aprisindo’s secretary general, Yudhi Komarudin, has called for an intensive government review of the industry before the ban is imposed. The Department of Trade and Industry claims the ruling is necessary to promote the growth of the country’s leather processing industry and prevent a lack of supply.

In November 2003, the department placed a ban on leather imports from China as the country has not issued a report on Foot and Mouth disease for years. The ban was temporarily lifted in October 2003 until January 2004 due to the serious shortage of leather being experienced in Indonesia.

In 2000, Indonesia’s exports of raw leather totalled 634,272 kg and were valued at $2.1 million. Exports of half-processed leather amounted to 27,168 tonnes, worth $55.6 million while processed leather exports came in at 2,079 tonnes ($28.9 million).
