Indian leather corporation sets its sights on US outsourcing opportunities

India’s Leather Industries Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (Lidcap) has said it is to step up its efforts to develop footwear outsourcing contracts with large US wholesalers and retailers.

In a press conference to announce the corporation’s intentions last week, minister for small and cottage industries and employment generation, B. Gopala Krishna Reddy,  said negotiations with a number of US companies were well advanced, as were plans for a number of leather parks in Andhra Pradesh.

 

Announced in October, 2002 the ‘Malupu’ plan will see the creation of 27small export-oriented ‘leather parks’ and several larger parks at a cost Rs 550 crore over five years.  The programme will also incorporate a number of traning initiatives.

An international leather export park (NILEX) at Hyderabad, an international leather complex at Nellore and a mega leather industrial park in Chittoor district were among the other facilities being readied for the development, the minister added.
