Bank plea from Pakistan leather garment makers

08/01/2004

Mr. Fawad Ijaz Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PLGMEA) has urged Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Governor, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to approve the commercial status of the SME Bank.

Approval of the bank’s status is seen as enabling PLGMEA members as well as other small and medium-sized enterprises increase their exports through refinance on concessionary terms. Mr. Fawad stated that SME Bank has already applied to SBP for Commercial Bank Status.

Dr. Ishrat was also asked to increase the limit of SME ‘clean facility’ to Rs. 5 million from Rs. 3 million as allowed under Regulation R-3 of Prudential Regulations.

Mr. Fawad said he hoped Dr. Ishrat Hussain would kindly consider the PLGMEA request in the interests of small & medium enterprise exporters throughout Pakistan.
