‘Leather Industry Promotion Committee’ launched in Bengal

27/12/2003

The Bengalese government has established a new ‘Leather Industry Promotion Committee’ to help boost the Indian region’s leather industry.

In 2002, Bengal’s leather exports declined 19% to $206 million (184 million square feet), compared with 2001. During 2003, this figure has fallen a massive 25% to just $191 million (164 million square feet).

The Government says it hopes to increase exports 7% to $200 million in 2004. 60-70% of the region’s leather is exported to China through Hong Kong.
