Turkish garment makers hit by double face discrepancies
Turkish producers who made up garments and waited for Russian customers found the double face season frustrating and erratic. Orders were up and down, feeble or fizzing. Many had stock left, giving the impression that the season was disappointing.
However, garment makers with a keener business sense ordered raw skins in the season and kept optimum stocks of processed leather up to dyeing/colouring stage. Garments were made only to customer specification. These producers carried the season and know their customers and markets better.
"It is prudent to order double-face skins in season and keep our tannery running," Mr. Erdogan Sen, owner of Sen Deri, explained.
The same maker said that, although garment exports will exceed $1 billion for 2003, if Turkish producers were more cohesive and objective, they would be capable of exports of $5 billion. Clearly there is scope for maturity here.
