Brown Shoe fined for environmental damage
The Brown Shoe Co. has been fined over $1 million for environmental damage in relation to real estate previously owned by the company, in
The fine was imposed at the end of 12 week hearing, during which Brown advised that it had already paid $10 million to clean up the property and that plans were in place for another $8 million to be spent
The class action was filed by more than 1,000 property owners and residents in the area around the real estate, where it was claimed that that Brown had illegally dumped materials. However, the company was not alone in being targeted as the Colorado Department of Transportation and three other smaller businesses were found guilty of the same charges and ordered to pay a total of $2,288,450. Brown was found to have been 44% responsible for the damage. No punitive damages were awarded.
