Bangladesh tanners reaffirm commitment to Savar production zone
The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industry Corporation (BSCIC), Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) and Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather goods and Footwear Exporters' Association (BFLLFEA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to relocate the Hazaribagh leather industry in its entirety to the proposed leather industries complex at Savar.
BSCIC chairman Mohammad Solaiman, BTA chairman Alhaj Mohammad Harun Chowdhury and BFLLFEA chairman Alhaj Rezaul Karim Ansary signed the MoU last week in the presence of the Industry Minister Matiur Rahman Nizami and industry secretary Dr Shoeb Ahmed. The government has taken up the Taka 1757.5 million ($31 million) project that is expected see the 200 acre complex at Savar and Keraniganj upazila completed by September 2005. A total of 195 tanneries will be set up under four categories, creating an estimated 100,000 employment opportunities.
Effectively a small town, the zone will have its own police and fire stations, shops, a bank and primary health centre. A collection and treatment plant for the processing of the zone’s annual output of 61,000 tons of waste will be constructed on 10 acres.
A project implementation committee has been formed with Mohammad Solaiman 0as president. The chairmen of BFLLFEA and BTA will form the building plot allocation committee and there will be four categories of plot.
