Indian leather exports show promise
According to the Indian Commerce Ministry, the country’s leather industry exports showed signs of promising growth during the first two months of the financial year.
During April-May 2003 total exports were up 1.03% to $299.58 million, compared with the same period in 2002. Of the total, leather footwear exports rose 24.09% to $77.24 million and leather goods increased 1.95% to $66.89 million.
A significant decline in exports was also registered. Finished leather declined 2.59% to $90.78 million and leather garments fell 14.3% to $25.47 million. Footwear components fell 26% to $25.46 million while saddlery exports were down 5.52% to $6.61 million.
