Italian first half footwear production down 4.5%

According to the National Association of Italian Footwear Manufacturers (ANCI), the country’s footwear production declined 4.5% during the first half 2003.

 

75% of companies interviewed stated that they had suffered a drop in production during January-June 2003. 17% reported a slight change while just 8% said they had increased manufacture.

 

During January-May 2003, Italian footwear exports declined 4.1% in quantity and 3.9% in value to Eur2.7 billion (144,162 pairs.) Leather footwear exports fell 3.5% in quantity and 4.1% in value to Eur2.3 billion (92,860 pairs).

 

The majority of exports were to Germany, accounting for 20.9% of the total in quantity (30,114 pairs). France accounted for 14.9% (21,432 pairs) and the US 13.6% (19,677 pairs).

 

Imports, meanwhile, increased 19.8% in quantity and 7.7% in value to Eur1.06 billion (130,505 pairs). Leather footwear exports rose 11.6% in quantity and 6.3% in value to Eur656.60 million (49,394 pairs).

 

China was the source of the majority of footwear imports (37% at 49,394 pairs). Romania imported 16.4% (21,372 pairs) and Vietnam 8.7% (11,322 pairs).
