Typhoon causes $1 billion damages in South Korea

Early reports suggest that the most powerful typhoon ever to hit South Korea will have significantly affected the country’s tanning and leather industries.

Typhoon Maemi, which struck the country in the early hours of Saturday morning, has caused an estimated $1 billion in damages and left at least 89 dead.

The storm, reaching winds of up to 216 kph (134 mph), destroyed buildings, brought down power lines and forced thousands to evacuate their homes. Operations are still suspended at five of the country’s nuclear power plants.
