At a meeting held by the China Leather Industry Association in Shanghai on Monday (September 1), it was revealed that the country’s trade in leather goods totalled $10.74 billion in 2002, with exports by far accounting for the largest share at $10.68 billion, a 10% increase on the year before. The average price of imported leather shoes was $23.07 and that of exported pairs $5.03.

Mr. Wang Zhen Tao, president of Aokang Group, commented that in spite of the increases, the industry was still being held back by a lack of investment in new technology and quota restrictions.
